During the week of October 7th, Students in Mrs. Harkness and Mr. Sims Freshman Seminar courses were presented with a variety of issues affecting their community (the topics on the table). The students were asked to collaborate with their peers, who shared a similar interest in solving that problem, to develop possible solutions that may be implemented.

“On the Table” allowed the students to develop skills that are in high demand in the workplace such as:

  • Using design thinking to create a solution
  • Working together to solve a common problem
  • Learning how to agree to disagree professionally
  • See the problem from others perspectives/experience
  • Brainstorming and prioritization skill

Here is what some of the students and teachers said about their experience.

Don Roberts, a senior in the Information Technology program, interviewed several students for some feedback.  He asked the students what topics were “On the Table” for discussion. The students said that the problems being discussed ranged from homelessness and all the way to racism and sexism.

Overall, the students really enjoyed the ability to comment and come up with real world solutions to problems that are affecting their communities.  They would also like to continue this endeavor and have more opportunities to do so in the future.
